Rottweiler Temperament

Rottweilers have been used as police and military dogs for centuries because of their strength, intelligence and trainability.
They have a reputation for being an aggressive guard dog, and they can be if trained that way, but generally they are a sensitive and loyal animal that wants to please their owner or family. When socialized with people and animals they are very friendly and playful. Rottweilers thrive on human affection and attention, and are nowadays considered a good companion dog. They need plenty of exercise, swimming, running beside a bike, walking or retrieving a ball are Rottweilers favourite pastimes. Some of the Rottweilers talents include herding, guarding, tracking, police work, and obedience trials.

Rottweiler History

The breed is an ancient one, and its history stretches back to the Roman Empire. Roman legions travelled with cattle for meat and used working dogs to herd the cattle. It is said the Legions travelled through the small German town of Rottweil where the war dogs 'met' local sheepdogs, creating the Rottweiler.
The Rottweiler proved its worth in droving and protecting cattle from robbers and wild animals. The Rottweiler spread into Holland and Scandinavia where it was used as a drover and cart puller.
The railroads and other new technologies lessened peoples reliance on these dogs almost making them extinct but in the early 1900s they began to make a comeback due to breeding of them for police work.
Since then Rottweilers have become popular with dog owners, and were officially recognized by the AKC in 1935.
The Rottweiler today is used for a variety of things such as tracking, herding, watch dogging, police work, obedience trails, as well as guarding which he does exceptionally well in.
